A COQUETTE OR THE DREAM OF THE YEAR OF THE FIRE-ROOSTER
dreamed in the night of 27th to 28th of January
At midnight I left a party - sorry I can't remember it exactly. I met nobody on my way home. I walked past the column with the big clock erected in the city center of Šiauliai. It's named the Rooster clock becauce of the metallic rooster on the roof above the clock. Suddenly it sounded like thunder and I saw the rooster standing in front of me.

'What do you want? Where are you from?' I asked astonished.
'I am born in China but I spent many years in Japan too. Already for a long time I have lived in Lithuania, there in the center of Šiauliai. Sorry, that I was too loud but you see it is shortly after 12.00 a.m. It started the Year of the Rooster! Happy New Year!'

'Happy New Year to you too! But what does it mean?'
'Do you mean the rooster? It's almost the epitome of punctuality! For ancestors who had no alarm clocks, the crowing was significant, as it could awaken people to get up and start to work.
The Chinese believe that by crowing at the dawn, the Rooster spirit chases away evil spirits.

'It's O. K. But I mean, what will the Rooster Year bring to our life?'
'Success of hard work as well as order and enough food to eat! The rooster will find something everywhere, even in the desert,' he made boast about himself.

'All know that you can beat your wings. But nobody through, not even in dreams, that you can fly over the city as well as that you are so loud in your praises!'
'Only once in 12 years! And only in that case, when a coquette goes past this Clock column at the moment, when the Year of the Rooster begins.'

Meanwhile begin to thunder fireworks, there arose a ball of fire above the city centre of Šiauliai, and the rooster disappeared from view. When the smoke and the fire has cleared you could see the rooster on the roof of clock column again, illuminated by the new moon...
All know that the rooster can beat its wings. Sometimes you can see it flying over the city in the dream. But has the rooster magical powers too? Let's wait and see!
EINE KOKETTE ODER DER TRAUM IM JAHR DES FEUER-HAHNES,
geträumt vom 27. zum 28. Januar
Um Mitternacht verließ ich eine Party (genau kann ich mich nicht entsinnen). Auf dem Nachhausweg begegnete mir zu dieser Stunde kein Mensch. Als ich an der Säule mit der Uhr und dem Hahn darauf im Zentrum von Šiauliai vorbeikam, gab es einen entsetzlichen Knall, und der Hahn vom Dach der Uhrsäule stand plötzlich vor mir.

"Was willst du? Woher kommst du?"- fragte ich erstaunt.
"Ich bin in China geboren und habe meine Jugend in Japan verbracht. Ich lebe schon seit vielen Jahren in Litauen, im Zentrum von Šiauliai. Entschuldige, dass ich mit so einem Knallefekt aufgetreten bin, aber es ist kurz nach zwölf. Prosit Neujahr des Hahnes!"

"Prosit! Aber was bedeutet das?
"Was bedeutet der Hahn? Das ist ja ein Symbol für Pünktlichkeit! In den alten Zeiten, als es keinen Wecker gab, bedeutete der krähende Hahn, dass man aufstehen und mit der Arbeit anfangen muss. In China glaubt man, dass der krähende Hahn in der Morgendämmerung alle bösen Geister vertreibt!

"Alles klar! Die bösen Geister sind weg! Und was erwartet uns noch im Hahn-Jahr?"
"Harte Arbeit! Doch ihr werdet sehen: Es lohnt sich am Ende. Es gibt endlich Ordnung und genug zu essen! Der Hahn findet ja immer etwas - sogar in der Wüste,"- rühmte sich er.

"Alle wissen, dass du mit den Flügeln schlagen kannst. Aber dass du über die Stadt fliegst und so ein Großsprecher bist, konnte man sich nicht zumuten, nicht mal im Traum."
"Nur einmal pro 12 Jahre und nur im Fall, wenn eine Kokette rein zufällig an meiner Uhrsäule vorbeikommt, wenn das Jahr des Hahnes beginnt."

"Bescheidenheit ist nicht die Zier des Hahnes! Bist du sicher, dass man mit dir überhaupt kokettieren will?"
"Kokette" stammt aus dem französischen Wort "coq", was "der Hahn" bedeutet. Also, alle, die im Jahr des Hahnes geboren sind, kann man Koketten oder Koketter (wenn es solches deutsches Wort gibt?) nennen.

"Glaubst du, die schaffen es nicht ohne dich?"
"Doch! Aber ich bin ja euer Erfolgstalisman für das Jahr 2017. Hört zu, Koketierende! Das ist ohne Frage euer Jahr: nutzt die Chance! Aber vergesst nicht auch die, die eine Unterstützung brauchen - es zeitigt den Doppelerfolg für euch!

"Und alles ohne Bemühungen?"
"Doch, doch! Kurz gesagt: arbeitet, riskiert und lächelt bitte! Der Erfolg ist auf eurer Seite! Übrigens, der erste Tag des Hahn-Jahres 2017 und der Namenstag Nijolė fielen in Litauen zusammen.

"Das stimmt! Und es ist zum ersten Mal, soviel ich mich erinnere."
"Alle, die im Hahn-Jahr geboren sind, haben einen sehr ausgeprägten "sechsten Sinn" und ich schenke dir auch den siebten, den magischen! Also, viel Erfolg zum magischen Namenstag Nijole! Und nochmal alles Beste im Jahre des Feuer-Hahnes!"

Dabei gab es einen entsetlichen Knall, dann Feuerwerke und einen Feuerball, in dem der Hahn verschwand. Als sich alles aufklärte, konnte man den Hahn wieder auf dem Dach der Uhrensäule sitzen sehen, beleuchtet vom Neumondschein.
Dass dieser Hahn die Flügel schlagen kann, wissen es alle. Dass er über die Stadt fliegt, kann man davon im Traum sehen. Besitzt er aber auch magische Kraft? Wollen wir sehen!

Vidurnaktį ėjau iš vakarėlio (neatsimenu kokio)
ir kažkodėl atsidūriau Šiaulių miesto centre, prie laikrodžio kolonos su Gaidžiu.
Aplinkui nė gyvos dvasios - tik staiga virš kolonos driokstelėjo didžiulis ugnies kamuolys, kurio įsuktas Gaidys atsiplėšė nuo laikrodžio stogelio ir nutūpė tiesiai prieš mane.

- Ko nori? Iš kur esi? - paklausiau nustebusi.
- Esu gimęs Kinijoje, jaunystę praleidęs Japonijoje, bet jau daug metų gyvenu Lietuvoje, čia, Šiaulių miesto centre. Atsiprašau, jei išgąsdinau, bet prasidėjo Naujieji Gaidžio metai. Su Naujaisiais!

- Dėkui! Su Naujaisiais! O ką tai reiškia?
- Ką reiškia "gaidys"? Apskritai, tai - punktualumo simbolis! Senovėje, kai dar nebuvo žadintuvų, jo giedojimas reiškė, kad reikia keltis ir eiti dirbti. O Kinijoje tikima, kad auštant užgiedojus gaidžiui išsilaksto visos piktos dvasios.

- Supratau - piktosios dvasios jau išvaikytos. O ką dar gero šie metai atneš visiems?
- Reiks daug dirbti, bet apsimokės. Be to, bus tvarka! Bus ko valgyti - juk gaidys visada ras slieką, net ir dykumoje!

- Visi žino, kad gali plasnoti sparnais. Bet, kad gali skraidyti po miestą ir taip girtis - net sapnuose nesusapnuosi!

Both the tea "Pan Da Hai" and the hot candid egg pancakes with sesame you can find in
one of the Chinese restaurants of Šiauliai.
In the center of the fourth largest city of Lithuania (next to the column with the cock), there are two Chinese restaurants, a Japanese restaurant as well as the restaurant 'Asian Fusion'. Maybe, it is lacking in Chinese authenticity here but you can see the pleasant Lithuanian interior, aesthetically combined with the Chinese or Japanese motifs.
The Lithuanian-Chinese or Lithuanian-Japanese atmosphere is a perfect match to celebrate the New Year according to the lunar calendar. The New Year starts on the first day of the new moon and finish with the full moon.
Often it is called Chinese New Year. By the way, in China it is a spring festival...

Sowohl den Tee "Pan da hai", als auch die erwähnten Eierkuchen mit Sesam
kann man in einem der chinesischen Restaurants von Šiauliai finden.
Im Zentrum der viertgrößten Stadt Litauens, in der Nähe der Hahn-Säule, befinden sich sogar zwei chinesische Restaurants, ein japanisches Restaurant sowie das Restaurant "Asian Fusion". Zwar fehlt es hier an chinesischer Authentizität (Gerüche und Einfachheit), aber es stimmt angenehm litauische Innenausstattung, ästhetisch kombiniert mit den chinesischen oder japanischen Motiven.
Die litauisch-chinesische oder litauisch-japanische Atmosphäre passt bestens zum Neujahr, gefeiert laut dem Mondkalender. Das Neujahr beginnt am ersten Tag des Neumondes und dauert zwei Wochen bis zum Vollmond. Es wird oft Chinesisches Neujahr genant.
Übrigens, in China is es ein Frühlingsfest...

According to the lunar calendar of China, Japan
and of the other Asian countries there is a twelve-year cycle that relates each year to an animal.
Šiauliai, the fourth largest city of Lithuania, is prepared for the Year of Rooster very well. In the city center there is a column with the clock and the sculpture of the rooster on top of it.
The Rooster Column is at the junction of the two main streets of Šiauliai. It's at the historic point where the main paths have crossed 700 years ago and they led to the North (Riga, capital of Latvia) and to the South (Königsberg), to the East (Vilnius, capital of Lithuania) and to the West (Baltic Sea and Klaipėda).
In Šiauliai can be celebrated also the Year of the Cat and it of the Monkey as well as the Year of the Ox and it of the Snake. Because you can see here many cats in the Museum of the Cats*, and the ox, that looks at you from the city emblem, is presented on the wall next to the Rooster-Column. The sculptures of two monkeys stand at the entrance of the bank, in which front you can see a snake winding around the column.
In Šiauliai, there is also a column with a pig, but it is already fried. So it is better to go to celebrate the Year of the Pig to Winchester, the first capital of England, where you can see a nice pig grazing next to Hampshire County Council...
Lithuania as well as Europe are prepared for the Year of the Horse very well because everywhere you can see horse-riding people, I mean monuments. But in Šiauliai you don't find any horse and the most famous equestrian of Lithuania is the Grand Duke Gediminas in our capital Vilnius. Next to it you can see the symbol of the Year of the Dog - the statue "The Lithuanian dogs,
called skalikai'.
The Year of the Rat could be celebrated in Russia, where is the Museum of Mice in the town of Myshkin. And for the Year of the Tiger you can visit Oslo where stands the most popular Norwegian tiger next to its main Railway Station. Don't worry: you will stay alive!
So, what else? The Year of Goat? It's simple because you can see many goats in the nativity scenes
between Christmas and New Year.
And what about the Year of the Dragon? It's the best if you go to celebrate it to China!
It's very important to choose right where to celebrate! And don't forget that the New Year
according to the lunar calendar is a spring festival...**

Laut dem Mondkalender in China, Japan und in anderen Asienländern
gibt es einen zwölfjährigen Zyklus, wobei jedes Jahr den Namen eines Tieres trägt.
Šiauliai, die viertgrößte Stadt Litauens, ist für das Jahr des Hahnes am besten vorbereitet. In der Stadtmitte steht da eine Säule mit der Uhr und der Skulptur des Hahnes darüber. Die Hahn-Säule steht an der Kreuzung der zwei wichtigsten Straßen von Šiauliai. Das ist die historische Stelle, wo sich die wichtigsten Wege auch vor 700 Jahren gekreuzt haben, die in alle vier Richtungen führten: nach Norden (Riga, Hauptstadt Lettlands) und Süden (Königsberg), nach Osten (Vilnius, Hauptstadt Litauens) und Westen zur Ostsee (Klaipėda).
In Šiauliai könnte man auch das Katzen- und Affenjahr sowie das Jahr des Büffels als auch der Schlange feiern. Denn in der Stadt gibt es ein Katzenmuseum*, und der Büffel guckt vom Stadtwappen an der Wand eines Hauses in der Nähe der Hahn-Säule.
Die Affen-Skulpuren stehen am Eingang einer Bank, vor der sich eine Schlange um die Säule schlängelt.
In Šiauliai gibt es auch eine Säule mit dem Schwein, aber es ist schon gebraten. So ist besser zum Jahr des Schweines nach Winchester, zur ersten Hauptstadt Englands zu fahren, wo ein nettes Schweinchen am Bürgermeisteramt der Grafschaft Hampshire weidet...
Das ganze Litauen sowie das ganze Europa ist immer für das Jahr des Pferdes vorbereitet, weil überall Rosse-Skulpturen mit den darauf reitenden Königen oder Fürsten zu sehen sind. In Šiauliai aber gibt es keinen Reiter und das berühmteste Ross, auf dem der litauische Großfürst Gediminas sitzt, steht in Vilnius, in der Hauptstadt Litauens. In der Nähe des Denkmals steht das Symbol für das Jahr des Hundes - die Skulptur "Die litauischen Hunde, genannt Skalikai".
Zum Jahr der Ratte könnte man nach Russland fahren, wo es in der Stadt Myshkin das Museum der Mäuse gibt.
Zum Jahr des Tigers passt am besten Oslo, wo am Hauptbahnhof der beliebteste norwegische Tiger steht. Aber nur keine Angst: man bleibt am Leben! Bestimmt!
Es bleibt noch das Jahr des Schaffes (oder der Ziege) - Schaffe sieht ja man jedes Jahr in allen Krippen. Und das Jahr des Drachens ist am besten in China zu feiern.
Am wichtigsten ist es richtig zu wählen! Und nicht vergessen, dass das Neujahr laut dem Mondkalender
ein Frühlingsfest ist...**

Beje, garbingiausioje vietoje, prie tos istorinės sankryžos, kur eina riba tarp Aukštaitijos ir Žemaitijos ir kur kryžiuojasi dvi pagrindinės miesto gatvės, kurios čia kryžiavosi ir prieš beveik 700 metų kaip pagrindiniai Lietuvos keliai, vedantys į Šiaurę (Joniškis, Ryga) ir Pietus (Tilžė, Karaliaučius), į Rytus (Vilnius) ir į Vakarus prie Baltijos jūros (Klaipėda).
Šiauliuose būtų galima sėkmingai sutikti ir Katės, Gyvatės, Beždžionės bei Jaučio metus. Mieste yra Kačių muziejus*, jautis puikuojasi Šiaulių herbe ant sienos šalia Gaidžio laikrodžio, o beždžionės saugo įėjimą į vieną banką, šalia kurio aplink koloną rangosi gyvatė.
Mieste yra ir kolona su paršeliu, bet jis jau iškeptas. Tad Kiaulės metų sutiktuvėms galima nuvykti į DB miestą Vinčesterį, pirmąją Anglijos sostinę, kur miesto centre prie savivaldybės kapstosi paršelis...
Visa Lietuva, praktiškai visa Europa, geriausiai pasiruošusi švęsti Arklio metus, nes retoje šalyje nepamatysi paminklo su žirgu. O štai Šiauliuose jo nėra, o garsiausias lietuviškas Žirgo paminklas, ant kurio joja kunigaikštis Gediminas, stovi Vilniuje. Šalia esančią Gedimino kalno papėdę puošia skulptūra "Lietuvių skalikai", kur galima švęsti Šuns metus.
Žiurkės Metus galima sutikti Rusijoje, kur Myškino mieste yra Pelių muziejus. O štai Tigro Metus galima sutikti Osle, prie norvegų numylėtojo tigro šalia Geležinkelio stoties: kad liksite gyvi - garantuota!
