Kadaise Malta ir Sicilija buvo viena sala,
kurią tirpstantys ledynai atskyrė Viduržiemio jūra. Kalėdinė Malta ir mirga mėlyname Viduržiemio jūros fone. Sniego nėra, bet kaip gali būti Kalėdos be sniego? Negali! Specialiai nuvykome į Siciliją ir štai jums - snieguoti linkėjimai, užfiksuoti prie Etnos ugnikalnio. Ugnikalnis atrodė neramus ir nuolat "spjaudėsi" baltais dūmais. Mums pasisekė, nes apačioje buvo debesuota, bet pakilus į 3300 metrų aukštį skaisčiai mėlynu dangumi ritinėjosi saulė, o balti debesys plaukė jau po kojomis. Mums iš tiesų pasisekė, nes šiandien, Kūčių rytą, Etnos ugnikalnis išsiveržė. Ten, kur vaikštinėjome prieš tris dienas, dabar teka lava... Bet mums pasisekė pasidovanoti Kalėdoms sniego, kurio Maltoje nėra. Taip, sniego nėra, bet visa kita, ko reikia Kalėdoms, čia yra su kaupu...

Malta und Sizilien waren einst eine Insel,
nun aber sind beide durch das Mittelmeer getrennt. Eben im blauen Hintergrund des Mittelmeeres glänzt das weihnachtliche Malta. Es gibt leider keinen Schnee...
Weihnachten ohne Schnee? Das kann nicht sein,
deshalb sind wir nach Sizilien gefahren, und bitte sehr: viele weiße Weihnachtsgrüße vom Ätna, vom mächtigsten Vulkan Europas! Wir hatten Glück, denn unten gab es keine Sonne, während wir bem Ätna in der Höhe von 3 300 Metern den strahlend blauen Himmel über uns und weiße Wolken unter uns sowie den Schnee hatten. An manchen Stellen konnte man kaum unterscheiden, wo schneebedeckte Landschaft und wo schon die Wolken sind...
Man fühlte, dass der Ätna unruhig ist, denn er spuckte immer wieder dichte weiße Wolken aus. Wir hatten wirklich Glück, denn heute am Heiligabend ist Ätna ausgebrochen. Dort, wo wir vor drei Tagen spazieren gegangen sind, fließt nun Lava...
Aber wir haben uns Weihnachtsbilder im Schnee geschenkt, den es in Malta nicht gibt. Aber alles andere, was man zum Weihnachten braucht, findet man hier...

Therefore, we went to Sicily and so - we send you pictures
with white Christmas greetings from the Mount Etna, Europe’s biggest and most active volcano. We were lucky, because it was cloudy day, but at the Mount Etna 3300 meters higher, we could enjoy the bright blue sky above us and the clouds below our feet, as well as snow. Sometimes you couldn't tell, where is snowcovered landscape and where are the clouds already...
You could feel, that Etna isn't peaceful, because the mount spewed white dense clouds again and again. We were very lucky, because today on Christmas Eve, Etna erupted and jetted lava over the places, where we had strolled three days ago...
But we had already enjoyed the pictures in snow,
that you can't discover in Malta. Everything else you need for Christmas you will find here...

tiek šventųjų skulptūrų, kiek čia.* Jos įkurdintos ant fasadų, parkuose, prie jūros ir beveik prie kiekvieno maltiečio namo durų, tarsi kiekvienas maltietis turėtų savo šventąjį, kuris jam neštų laimę. "Būkite šventais, jei norite būti laimingi!" - tokį kalėdinį palinkėjimą prieš savaitę išsakė ir popiežius Pranciškus...

Malta ist wirklich ein heiliges Land!
Man sieht nirgendwo so viele Skulpturen der Heiligen
wie hier.* Man entdeckt Heilige an den Fassaden und Dächern, in den Parks und an der Küste sowie fast an jeder Haustür der Malteser, als ob jeder Malteser seinen eigenen Heiligen hätte, der ihm Glück bringen würde. "Heilige zu sein, um glücklich zu sein. (...) Die Heiligkeit sei die Straße der Freude", so beendete auch der Papst Franziskus einen seiner Weihnachtsgrüße vor einer Woche...

Malta is really a holy country. Only there you could see
so many sculptures of saints.* You can discover the saints on the houses and roofs, on the coast next to the beach, as well as almost on every house door of the Maltese. It seems that every Maltese has a saint that brings luck. "Be saints in order to be happy. (...) We are not afraid of holiness. This is the path of joy." So concluded Pope Francis his Christmas wish a week ago.

Malta is the most Catholic country
of Europe after Vatikan. Christmas in Malta? Yes, of course!
In Malta, there are 365 churches. You have here a new church for every day of the year! It's interesting, that on the churches, you often could see three clocks showing different time in order to confuse the devil should he ever appear on earth. It's because only one clock shows an exact time. It's a very interesting resolution to drive away the evil spirits, isn't? But I think the Maltese themselves aren't big fans of the exact time too.
I don't know, whether all the churches were opened
at Christmas time, but our visited churches were full of people. In Valletta, the Anglican St Paul Cathedral was the most modest, but it was decorated so subtly and in good taste. And the gathered people there looked like really ladies and gentlemen. It was all completely different in the St John's Cathedral, located in Valletta too. It's one of the most beautiful churches in the Baroque style not only in Malta, but also in Europe. Its interior, redecorated in the 17th century, is extremely ornate, standing in sharp contrast with the really modest façade. In the Cathedral, you could enjoy the intricate carved and gildet walls, the wonderful painted ceiling and the ornate marble floor.
It wasn't a coincidence, that the main Mass of the 1st Christmas Day took place at St John’s Cathedral. The tourists could come in, but they had to sty next to the barrier around the entrance. It wasn't allowed to disturb the celebrating Christmas Mass. It was a surprise, when after the Mass, the Malta’s Archbishop went to the barrier, separated visitors from the praying people, and wished us 'Merry Christmas!' too. So, we wish you such Christmas surprises too!

Davor kommt nur noch der Vatikan selbst! Weihnachten in Malta? Besser kann nicht sein! Hier gibt es sogar 365 Kirchen. Also, für jeden Tag des Jahres steht eine Kirche auf Malta bereit! Interessant sehen die Kirchenuhren aus, denn nur eine davon eine exakte Zeit zeigt. Die verwirrenden Uhrzeiten sollen den Teufel daran hindern, zum Gottesdienst zu erscheinen. Eine interessante Lösung, böse Geister zu vertreiben, oder? Die Malteser selbst sind eigentlich auch keine Fans
für genaue Zeit...
Nicht klar, ob alle Kirchen zu Weihnachten offen waren,
aber die, die wir besucht hatten, waren voll. Am bescheidensten sah die Englische Kirche in Valletta aus, aber alles, besonders Weihnachtsdekorationen, waren so subtil und so geschmackvoll! Und die Leute da waren echte Ladys und Gentlemans. Ganz anders ist die St. John-Kathedrale in demselben Valletta, die absolute Barockpracht vom 17. Jh. mit wunderschönen Fresken an der Decke, vergoldeten Ornamenten an den Wänden sowie mit dem Marmorboden. Es ist eine der schönsten Barockkirchen Europas, aber nur innerlich, denn äußerlich sieht die Kathedrale absolut schlicht aus.
Es ist selbstverständlich, dass eben hier die wichtigste Messe
am 1. Weihnachtstag stattfand. Während der Messe durften auch die Touristen herein, aber nur am Eingang, denn gleich dahinter war die Schranke, damit die Messenteilnehmer nicht gestört werden. Es war eine Überraschung, als der Erzbischof nach der Messe zu unserer Schranke ging und uns, also den Touristen, "Frohe Weihnachten!" ("Merry Christmas!") wünschte. Mehr solche schönen Weihnachtsüberraschungen für alle!

Tai kur geriau švęsti Kalėdas jei ne čia? Maltoje yra 365 bažnyčios - kiekvienai metų dienai po bažnyčią! Beje, ant bažnyčių fasadų dažnai pamatysite du ar tris laikrodžius, kurių tik vienas rodo tikslų laiką. Pasirodo, taip norėta praeityje suklaidinti velnią, kad jis nepasirodytų mišiose... Įdomus pasirinkimas atbaidyti piktąsias dvasias, ar ne? Nors ir patys maltiečiai nėra skrupulingi dėl laiko - pusė valandos ten ar čia... Nežinau, ar visos bažnyčios atidarytos per Kalėdas,
bet mūsų aplankytos buvo perpildytos. Kukliausiai atrodė Anglikonų bažnyčia Vallettoje: tiek jos išorė, tiek vidus, tiek kalėdinės dekoracijos. Bet viskas taip subtiliai skoninga! Ir žmonės, kurie rinkosi, atrodė tikri džentelmenai ir tikros ledi. Visiška priešingybė toje pačioje Vallettoje yra Šv. Jono katedra. Iš išorės kuklus statinys apstulbina savo interjeru su įspūdingomis lubų freskomis, paauksuotais sienų ornamentais ir marmuro grindimis. Tai - didingiausia šventovė Maltoje ir vienas įspūdingiausių 17 a. Europos baroko statinių.
Nieko netikėta, kad pagrindinės Kalėdų mišios vyko būtent čia! Besimeldžiančiųjų erdvė Katedros viduje atitverta, tad mišių metu įleidžiami ir turistai, bet jie stebimi, kad elgtųsi pagarbiai. Buvo labai netikėta, kai po mišių Maltos arkivyskupas staiga sustojo ir prie mūsų, esančių už barjero, palaimino ir palinkėjo linksmų Kalėdų ("Merry Christmas!"). Linkiu visiems kuo daugiau tokių kalėdinių netikėtumų!

Ne mažiau nei šventieji, Maltoje yra garbinamas
valgymas, kuris yra antroji maltiečių religija. Nors gal tai jau pirmoji? Nes jei galvojate, kad maltiečiai tik meldžiasi, paklauskie jų patys, o atsakymas nustebins:
"Ankščiau meldėmės ir valgėme, o dabar tik valgome, jei tai ne Kalėdos..."
Turbūt didžiausia maisto meka Maltoje yra 2018 m. rekonstruota Valletos turgavietė "Food Market". Tai - muziejus, turgus, prekybos centras ir maisto taškų galerija viename!

verehrt, das wohl die zweite Religion von Maltesern ist. Oder vielleicht sogar die erste? Meint ihr, dass Malteser nur beten? Fragt! Die Antwort überrascht: "Früher haben wir nur gebetet und gegessen. Jetzt aber essen wir nur..."
Das neue heilige Wahrzeichen von Malta ist vermutlich die zentrale Markthalle "Food Market", 2018 rekonstruiert. Das ist ein Museum, ein Markt, ein Supermarkt und eine Essgalerie in einem!

was man wirklich mag. Um es festzustellen, muss man einen Platz finden, wo man sein Tempo verlangsamen und sich überlegen kann, was man wirklich in dieser schnell ändernden Welt will?
