The Lithuanian Litas is 90 years old! Will it be 100?" - 

that was the question in 1992. No, it won't because on 1 January 2015 the litas was switched to the euro. 

The Lithuanian currency litas was first introduced 1922 after World War I, when Lithuania declared independence. The litas became Lithuania's currency once more on June 23, 1993, when it replaced the temporary talonas currency. It was a warm summer day and we celebrated optimistically litas' reintroduction in Café of Engineer House of Šiauliai. Dispite the exchange rate 1 litas to 100 talonas and 4.5 litas to 1 U.S. dollar. 

Now, in 2015: 3.45 litas = 1 euro and 1.16 U.S. dollar. 

Some people found parting with litas very sad ("litas was a beautifull and stable currency, the Lithuanian centas was more comfortable than eurocent"), the others - funny ("the money changes, humor remains" - it's from cartoon exhibition). But the most people exchanged money in a hurry: 

8 of 10 Lithuanian inhabitants paid with euros already in the beginning of the 2nd January week, although you could pay with litas till January 15, 2015. 

We celebrated the last day of litas in the Cafe "Prie teatro" ("At the Theatre") of Šiauliai. It was ordered a glass of champagne (100 ml / 1.30 euros) and whipped cream (ecological, not synthetic!) with chocolate and nuts (1.45 euros). It tasted very good and cost 2.75 euros. It was paid with Litas but the bill was in euros. It's interesting how much will it cost after the first euro-year? How much would cost a glass of champagne (100 ml) now in a cafe in Switzerland, Germany, Austria, England, Ireland, Italy and France? And what about whipped cream (ecological, not synthetic!)? 

The switch to euros is strange in all cantries. The prices seem to be stable with the new currency, but they go up. It's is a kind of magic, euro-magic...

JANUAR 2015: EURO 

Der Litas ist 90 Jahre alt! Wird er 100?" - hat man im Jahre 1992 gefragt.

Nein, nicht mehr! Denn ab dem 1. Januar 2015 gilt in Litauen Euro als Währung und Litas sind Geschichte. 

Zuerst war der Litas (Lt) litauische Währung in der Zwischenkriegszeit (1922-1941). Als Litauen 1990 wieder unabhängig wurde, hat man 1992 den Rubel durch die Übergangswährung Talonas ersetzt und am 23. Juni 1993 war Litas wieder da. Das war ein warmer Sommertag und wir haben seine Wiedergeburt im Cafe des Ingenierhauses lange gefeiert. Der Umtauschkurs lag aber nicht so optimistisch: bei 100 Talonas = 1 Litas (4,5 Litas = 1 US Dollar). Nun, im Januar 2015 ist es besser:

 3,45 Litas = 1 Euro (3,45 Litas = 1,16 US Dollar). Manche verabschiedeten sich vom Litas traurig ("schade, denn Litas war schön sowie stabil und litauische Centas waren bequemer als Eurocent"), die anderen - lustig (in der Karikaturenaustellung: "Das Geld wechselt, der Humor bleibt"), aber die meisten - in Eile. Am Anfang der 2. Januarwoche 2015 haben 8 von 10 Einwohnern mit Euro bezahlt, obwohl man mit Litas noch bis zum 15.01. 2015 zahlen durfte. Man konnte Abschied vom Litas auch feierlich nehmen, 

was wir auch gemacht haben: im Cafe "Prie teatro" ("Am Theater") von Šiauliai. Mit einem Glas Sekt (0,1 L / 1,30 Euro) und Schlagsahne (ÖKOLOGISCH!!! NICHT SYNTHETISCH) mit Schokolade und Nüssen (1,45 Euro) dazu. Es hat sehr gut geschmeckt und insgesamt 2,75 Euro gekostet. Die Rechnung war schon in Euro, obwohl wir mit Litas bezahlt haben. Interessant, was es in einem Jahr kostet? Was könnte eigentlich ein Glas Sekt (0,1 L) im Cafe in der Schweiz, in Deutschland, Österreich, England, Irland, Italien oder Frankreich kosten? Und die Schlagsahne (ökologisch!)? Gibt es noch so was in anderen Ländern? Der Übergang zu Euros hat in allen Ländern so seine Tücken mitgebracht. Die Preise schienen mit der neuen Währung stabil zu bleiben, aber sie stiegen. Eine Art Magie, Euromagie... 

2015 SAUSIS: EURAS 

"Litui 90 metų! Ar sulauks 100?"- buvo klausiama 2012 m. 

Nesulauks! Jo laikas baigėsi 2014-12-31, bet litu (kartu su euru) dar buvo galima atsiskaityt iki 2015 sausio 15 d. 

Litas kaip Lietuvos piniginis vienetas atsirado tarpukario metais (1922-1941) ir buvo atkurtas 1993 birželio 23 d. (pakeitė 1992 m. įvestus talonus). Tai buvo šilta vasaros diena ir mes ilgai šventėm lito atgimimą Inžinierių namų kavinėje. Nors keitimo kursas nebuvo optimistinis: 100 Talonų = 1 Litas, o 4,5 Lt = 1 JAV doleris. 

Dabar, 2015 m.: 3,45 lito = 1 euras ir 1,16 JAV dolerio. 

Atsisveikinta su litu įvairiai: liūdnai ("gaila, nes litas buvo ir gražus, ir stabilus, o lietuviški centai buvo patogesni negu eurocentai"); linksmai (karikatūrų parodoje: "pinigai keičiasi, humoras lieka"); skubiai (niekas nespaudė, bet antrąją 2015 m. savaitę eurais atsiskaitinėjo jau net 8 iš 10 gyventojų). Buvo galima atsisveikinti ir šventiškai - taip ir padarėme: sausio 14 d. Šiauliuose, kavinėje "Prie teatro" su šampano taure (100 g / 1,30 euro) ir natūralia (ne chemine!) plakta grietinėle su šokoladu ir riešutais už 1,45 euro. Šventinis atsisveikinimas kainavo viso 2,75 euro - sąskaita buvo pateikta eurais, nors mokėjome litais. Įdomu, kiek tai kainuos po metų? Kažin kiek šiandien šampano taurė (100 g) kainuoja kavinėje Vokietijoje, Austrijoje, Šveicarijoje, Anglijoje, Airijoje, Prancūzijoje ir kitur? Šiose šalyse niekur nemačiau natūralios plaktos grietinėlės, tik sintetinę, tad turbūt nėra ko lyginti. 

Euro įvedimas visose šalyse buvo klastingas: kainos atrodė lyg ir stabilios ir nekilo, 

bet jos kilo. Euromagija...

ŠIAULIAI (LITHUANIA): KAVINĖJE / IN CAFE 'ARKOS'

JANUARY, 2017: EURO-MAGIC 
Two years are past, after the litas was switched to the euro. 
In Šiauliai, you don't find the Cafe 'Prie teatro' ('At the Theatre') today, because it was closed. 
So we went to the Cafe 'Arkos' and celebrated the last day of litas once more. It was ordered a glass of champagne (100 ml / 1.20 euros) and whipped cream (ecological, not synthetic!) with chocolate and nuts (1.80 euros). It tasted very good and cost 3.00 euros - it's 0.25 euros higher price in comparison with the price payed two years ago. Now, the glass of champagne is 0.10 euros cheaper, while the price of the whipped cream (with reduced quantity and quality) is 0.35 higher. 
And what is to do now: 
faint from the price of the whipped cream or - let's go to drink champagne? 
That is the question! The question of the euro-magic...

JANUAR 2017: EUROMAGIE 
Es sind zwei Jahre nach der Einführung von Euro in Litauen vergangen. 
Es gibt nun kein Cafe "Prie teatro" ("Am Theater") mehr, so besucht man das Cafe "Arkos". 
Den Abschied vom Litas (vor 2 Jahren) feiert man wieder mit einem Glas Sekt (0,1 L / 1,20 Euro) und Schlagsahne (ÖKOLOGISCH!!! NICHT SYNTHETISCH) mit Schokolade und Nüssen (1,80 Euro). Es hat sehr gut geschmeckt und insgesamt 3 Euro gekostet. Das ist 0,25 Euro teurer als vor 2 Jahren. Der Sekt ist 0,10 Euro billiger und die Schlagsahne 0,35 Euro teurer geworden, obwohl ihre Menge kleiner und die Qualität schlimmer geworden sind. 
Was ist nun zu machen: In Ohnmacht wegen der Preise von Schlagsahnen fallen oder - wollen wir Sekt trinken? Das ist aber eine Frage! Eine Eurofrage!

2017 SAUSIS: EUROMAGIJA 
Praėjo du metai nuo euro įvedimo Lietuvoje.
Kavinės "Prie teatro" nebėra, tad atsisveikinimas su litu (prieš 2 metus) buvo paminėtas dar kartą kavinėje "Arkos" su šampano taure (100 g / 1,20 euro) ir natūralia (ne chemine!) plakta grietinėle su šokoladu ir riešutais už 1,80 euro. Šventinis prisiminimas kainavo viso 3 eurus, t. y., 25 eurocentais brangiau nei prieš du metus. Šampanas atpigo 10 eurocentų, o grietinėlė pabrango 35 eurocentais, nors jos kiekis sumažėjo, o kokybė suprastėjo. 
Tai ką dabar daryti: alpti dėl plaktos grietinėlės kainos ar eiti gerti šampano? 
Tai bent klausimas! Eurimagiškas klausimas!
