ENGLISH TIME
Each town in Britain once had its time. As before the railways and telegraphs came, there was no need for one exact time across the country, depending on how far west it was. Bristol was 12 minutes behind London, Oxford just 5 minutes.
Only in Oxford* is there a remnant of the old system. Over the main entrance of the Cathedral of Oxford is the Tom Tower with the Bell of Great Tom that rings every day at 9.05 pm. It was 9.00 pm once because Oxford is 5 minutes behind Greenwich. Perhaps, Britain would continue to delight in its old time system or solar time but the expansion of transport and communication during the 19th century created a need for a unified time-keeping system.
Britain is Britain, and it adopted its own standard time system for England, Scotland, and Wales. There is no 24-hour-system: 14:00 is 2 o'clock (p.m.) and 2.00 is 2 o'clock a.m. That's why you use a.m. (Latin: ante meridiem) and p.m. (post meridiem) in situations where it is necessary to point out that you want to say in the morning or in the evening. In other situations (or when it is clear that school starts in the morning and the concert in the evening) it is left out.
In GB, 24-hour-system is used on TV, in timetables and in the situations, where 12-hour-system would be a problem.
Anyway, the English time system is practical. In the world, all the dials are numbered 1 through 12 indicating the hours in a 12-hour cycle...

ENGLISCHE ZEIT
In alten Zeiten hatte jede englische Stadt ihre eigene Zeit. Der Greenwich-Meridian spielte keine Rolle, solange es kein Telegraph und keine Eisenbahn gab.
An das alte Zeitsystem erinnert man sich immer noch in Oxford.* Über dem Haupteingang der Kathedrale von Oxford ragt Thomas Turm mit der Thomas Glocke, die täglich um 21. 05 Uhr, d. h. um 9. 00 Uhr nach dem alten Zeitsystem, schlägt. Denn Oxford befindet 5 Minuten westlich vom Greenwich-Meridian. Wenn man könnte, würde man vermutlich in GB nach dem alten Zeitsystem leben oder noch besser - nach der Sonnenuhr. Leider, erlaubt es das moderne Leben nicht mehr. Trotzdem gibt es im Englischen kein 24-Stunden-System bei der Uhrzeit. 14.00 Uhr ist also 2 o'clock p.m. und 2.00 nachts ist 2 o'clock a.m. Man wählt für Vormittag a.m. (ante meridiem vom Lateinischen) und für Nachmittag p.m. (post meridiem). Die Angaben a.m. und p.m. werden nur angewendet, um Verwechslungen vorzubeugen. Meistens ist es ja klar, dass man um 8 Uhr vormittags frühstückt und dass um 8 Uhr abends zu Abend isst.
Doch dort, wo es problematisch wäre, gilt in GB auch das 24-Stunden-System (bei Fernsehsendungen, Fahrplänen, beim Militär etc.).
Eigentlich ist das englische Stunden-System ziemlich praktisch! Jedes Zifferblatt ist ja mit der 12-Stunden-Gradierung...

ANGLIŠKAS LAIKAS
Kadaise kiekvienas Anglijos miestas turėjo savo laiką. Grinvičas nevaidino jokio vaidmens, kol neatsirado telegrafas ir geležinkelis.
Senoji laiko sistema iki šiol prisimenama Oksforde.*
Virš pagrindinio Oksfordo katedros įėjimo yra Tomo bokštas su Didžiojo Tomo varpu, kuris kiekvieną vakarą suskamba 9.05 val. Senaisiais laikais tuo metu buvo 9.00 val., nes Oksfordas yra 5 minutės į vakarus nuo Grinvičo.
Jei galėtų, anglai turbūt ir gyventų pagal senąją laiko sistemą ar net pagal saulės laikrodį, bet modernus gyvenimas verčia keistis. Bet laiką jie vis tiek skaičiuoja savaip.
Angliška para turi ne 24 valandas, o dvi dalis po 12 valandų. Laikui iki pietų pridedama a.m. (ante meridiem / iš lotynų k.), o po pietų vartojama p.m. (post meridiem). Taigi, 14.00 val. bus "2 o'clock p.m., o 2.00 val. nakties - "2 o'clock a.m." Nuorodos a.m. ir p.m. vartojamos tik tuomet, kai gali kilti nesklandumų. Juk aišku, kad pusyčiaujama 8 val. ryte, o vakarieniaujama - 8 val. vakare. 24 valandų para galioja televizijai, traukinių ir autobusų tvarkaraščiams ir kitur, kur angliškasis paros skaičiavimas įneštų painiavos.
Iš kitos pusės, tai gana praktiška! Juk visi pasaulio laikrodžiai turi tik 12 padalų...
